Author Marianne Williamson has announced that she is returning to the Democratic presidential race, three weeks after suspending her long-shot campaign for the party’s nomination.
“As of today, I am unsuspending my campaign for the presidency of the U.S.,” Williamson said in a video posted Feb. 28 on X. The former congressional candidate suspended her campaign on Feb. 7 without endorsing any particular rival.
According to the outlet, Williamson’s move followed an optimistic result in the Michigan Democratic primary. As of the morning of Feb. 28, she had received about three percent of the vote in the Great Lakes State – slightly ahead of her competitor, Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips. The congressman received about 2.7 percent of the vote in Michigan, as per Axios.
Incumbent President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee running for a second term, received more than 81 percent of the vote. However, 13 percent of voters cast an “uncommitted” vote in protest of the Biden administration’s response to the Israel-Palestine war and Tel Aviv’s genocide of the Gazan population.
“I had suspended it because I was losing the horse race. But something so much more important than the horse race is at stake here, and we must respond,” said Williamson.
“Right now, we have a fascist standing at the door. Everybody’s all upset about it. Well, we should be upset about it. We need to say to the American people, ‘We see your pain.’ And we need to say to [former President] Donald Trump, ‘We see your BS.'”
The Democratic candidate concluded her video by calling on Americans to “respond to Trump’s dark vision of possibility.” She called for the establishment of a “peace academy as well as a military academy,” and reiterated the need for a ceasefire in Israel.
Williamson, who ran for Congress representing California in 2014 and failed, first challenged Biden in 2019 in time for the following year’s elections. Her first challenge to Biden failed, but this did not deter her. The author then issued a second challenge to Biden in March 2023, ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
However, she has struggled to gain traction throughout the Democratic nomination process, garnering single-digit percentages in various state primaries. She received just two percent of the vote in South Carolina, about three percent in Nevada and four percent of the vote in New Hampshire.
Williamson and Phillips are the only two candidates who have openly challenged Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination. The two went against the grain, in contrast with the Democratic National Committee that has directed all its efforts to ensure the 81-year-old Biden gets a second term.
The Minnesota congressman has blasted the Democratic Party for refusing to consider alternatives to Biden. He has even remarked that the idea of Biden beating Trump in the November 2024 presidential election is “delusional.”
“As a member of [the] House Democratic leadership, I supported and promoted the Biden agenda. I campaigned for him, voted for him and respect him. But how can anyone read this and conclude he’s positioned to defeat Trump? It’s delusional,” Phillips wrote on X. The Minnesota congressman included an article from POLITICO‘s Steven Shepard about Biden’s dismal standing in opinion polls. Phillips, who represents the North Star State in Congress, announced his run against Biden in October. While he has challenged Biden, he isn’t sympathetic to Trump either.
“I will not sit still and be quiet in the face of numbers that are so clearly saying that we’re going to be facing an emergency next November,” the congressman said. He warned that another four-year term for Trump would be a “crisis moment for American democracy.”
