Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thinks Kyiv must win against Russia in its ongoing conflict in order to be admitted to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
“I believe that we will be in NATO only if we win,” he told military officers during an April 30 meeting in the Ukrainian capital. “I don’t think that we will be admitted during the war.
According to Zelensky, full NATO accession would require unanimous approval from the bloc’s 32 members. But the group has made it clear that Kyiv cannot become a member while fighting is ongoing.
The comedian-turned-chief executive remarked that some NATO member nations are reluctant to admit Ukraine in the midst of its ongoing war with Russia because “they feel the risks.” Others, meanwhile, are “simply skeptical of the measure.”
“Therefore, for Ukraine to be accepted into the alliance, we need victory,” Zelensky said, adding that eventual membership into NATO would secure Ukraine’s independence.
The beleaguered nation formally applied to join the organization in September 2022. While NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and individual members agree that Ukraine should someday become part of the group, Kyiv has not been presented with a specific timetable. “It is widely understood that the country will not be admitted until the conflict with Russia is resolved,” Russia Today (RT) wrote. But according to Moscow, NATO’s eastward expansion and its military cooperation with Ukraine are among the root causes of the conflict. Russia considers NATO a threat to its national security and insists that Ukraine must become a neutral country.
Meanwhile, Stoltenberg told Reuters during an April 29 visit to Kyiv that the delays in weapons deliveries had “put a dent into the trust” between Ukraine and its foreign backers. Officials in Kyiv have blamed the slowdown of deliveries for the failed counteroffensive last year and the recent losses of eastern Ukrainian cities to the Russian Armed Forces.
“While the EU is struggling to find enough arms and ammunition for Ukraine’s wartime needs, the latest aid package from the U.S. had been stuck for months in [the U.S.] Congress due to political wrangling,” RT continued. “The delays sparked worries in Kyiv, with Zelensky warning that Ukraine would lose if ammunition shortages were not remedied.”
Back in April, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken insisted that Ukraine will become a member of NATO – amid threats of World War III from Russia should Kyiv join the group.
“Ukraine, the determination of every country represented here at NATO remains rock solid,” he told journalists in the Belgian capital Brussels. “We will do everything we can, allies will do everything they can, to ensure that Ukraine has what it needs to continue to deal with Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine – an aggression that gets worse with every passing day. Ukraine will become a member of NATO.”
According to Blinken, one important agenda in NATO’s annual summit for this year is to “help build a bridge to that membership and to create a clear pathway for Ukraine moving forward.” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba concurred, remarking: “Of course, we believe that Ukraine deserves to be a member of NATO. This should happen sooner rather than later.”
But many are raising red flags on NATO’s Article Five, which binds all of the group’s member nations. Under this provision, an armed attack against one NATO ally is considered an attack against all members – with the rest of the bloc’s members required to aid the besieged member country. “Making Ukraine a member of NATO means that the U.S. will be going to war against Russia as mandated by Article Five,” InfoWars stated.
