King Abdullah II of Jordan has warned U.S. President Joe Biden that Israel’s invasion of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip risks sparking a new massacre in the region.
In a statement, the Jordanian royal court said the Hashemite monarch “warned of the repercussions of the Israeli ground offensive on Rafah, which could cause a regional spillover of the conflict.” According to Reuters, the two leaders’ conversation took place on May 6 after Abdullah had lunch with Biden at the White House.
“The Israeli attack on Rafah, where 1.4 million Palestinians are internally displaced as a result of the war on Gaza, threatens to lead to a new massacre. His Majesty [Abdullah II] stressed the importance of all efforts that seek an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.”
The statement also reiterated that the two leaders “affirmed their commitment to working to reach a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza, stressing the importance of facilitating the delivery of sustainable humanitarian aid to the [Gaza] Strip in light of the dire needs.”
Meanwhile, the White House said in a separate statement that Biden and Abdullah II talked about “the need for an immediate release of the hostages held by Hamas and a sustainable ceasefire that allows for a surge of the urgently needed humanitarian assistance to be delivered safely through Gaza.” It reiterated that the two leaders “both remain committed to achieving a durable, lasting piece to include a pathway to a Palestinian state with security guarantees for Israel.”
According to Reuters, the president and the monarch last met at the White House in February. The two discussed at the time a daunting list of challenges, including the looming Israeli ground offensive in southern Gaza and the suffering of Palestinian civilians. The Hashemite kingdom and other Arab states have been highly critical of Israel’s actions and have been demanding a ceasefire since mid-October as civilian casualties began to skyrocket.
The private meeting between Biden and Abdullah happened on the same day as Israel carpet-bombing Rafah. While Palestinians were told to evacuate the city ahead of the attacks, Israel prefaced the offensive by rejecting a ceasefire Hamas already agreed to. But according to The Cradle, both Amman and Washington continue backing Israel. This is despite strongly-worded statements the two nations issue against Tel Aviv’s genocide of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The U.S. has issued multiple vetos against ceasefire resolutions brought forward by various countries at the United Nations General Assembly throughout the past six months of the Israeli campaign in Gaza. These vetos, the outlet said, mainly stem from demands that weight against both American and Israeli interests.
Moreover, Washington has also continued its arms sales to Israel while pushing Hamas to accept a ceasefire. Only one shipment of weapons to Israel has been halted since the Oct. 7 attack, which followed Tel Aviv sending evacuation orders to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced as a result of the conflict.
The Cradle also mentioned that the Hashemite kingdom has continued to protect Tel Aviv’s interests despite its calls for a ceasefire since October. In the most recent instance, Jordan opened up its airspace last month to help shoot down Iranian drones and missiles during Operation True Promise. The attack was in retaliation for Israel’s bombing of the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, which killed top generals of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Aside from this, Jordan has been cracking down on pro-Palestinian protesters within the kingdom’s borders. These protesters have vocally condemned the Israeli attacks and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. A similar scenario is also seen in the U.S., with law enforcement cracking down on student protests against Israel in various American universities.
