Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) has condemned the recent “guilty” verdict against former President Donald Trump.
The former president was found guilty of all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment on May 30. Trump was accused of orchestrating a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels through his then-lawyer Michael Cohen. The payment served to silence her about an alleged sexual encounter just before the 2016 election.
Prosecutors argued that the payment, misclassified as legal fees in the Trump Organization’s records, was an unlawful attempt to influence the election outcome. Trump himself meanwhile admitted to reimbursing Cohen for the payment, but denied any wrongdoing. He also labeled the trial presided by Judge Juan Merchan as a politically motivated “witch hunt.” (Related: Biden CAN’T BEAT Donald Trump in November, says Andrew Yang.)
“I’d say this was probably the weakest case people brought against him,” RFK Jr. said during the Consensus 2024 cryptocurrency conference in Austin, Texas. “My belief is that it will end up helping Trump among a large part of the [the] American public who believes that the judicial system, the enforcement system, have been weaponized against [him] politically. That’s bad for our country.”
“And I think it’s a mistake for the Democratic Party. I think the Democratic Party believes it has a candidate that can’t beat Trump and that they need to do it in the court, and I think that’s bad for our country. I think it’s bad for democracy, and I think it’s politically going to backfire on them.”
The independent candidate also took to X to denounce the verdict, writing: “The Democratic Party’s strategy is to beat President Trump in the courtroom rather than the ballot box. This will backfire in November. Even worse, it is profoundly undemocratic.”
“America deserves a president who can win at the ballot box without compromising our government’s separation of powers or weaponizing the courts. You can’t save democracy by destroying it first. The Democrats are afraid they will lose in the voting booth, so instead they go after President Trump in the courtroom.”
Despite his criticism of Trump’s guilty verdict, the nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy reiterated his opposition to the presumptive Republican nominee. “I’m not a fan of Trump – I’m running against him,” RFK Jr. continued during his speech in Austin.
“The debt, he ran up an $8 trillion debt – more than all presidents from George Washington to George W. Bush combined. He shut down our country after promising that he was going to run America like a business. He shut down all of our business – 3.3 billion businesses with no due process, no just compensation, no scientific citation. He embroiled our country in foreign wars. The division that we have in our country is now largely due to him and President [Joe] Biden, and it’s not a good thing for our country.”
RFK Jr. even found a way to endorse his candidacy, while comparing his independent presidential bid against the Democrats in dealing with Trump on his X account.
“I’m also running against President Trump in this election. The difference is I’m challenging him on his record,” he posted. “His lockdowns during Covid. His atrocious environmental record. His cozy relationship with corporate America. His support for the war machine. His failure to root out waste and corruption in Washington. His service to the billionaire class. His bloating of the national debt. These are the issues that shape American lives. I’ll challenge him on these things, but the Democrats won’t. You know why? Because they pursue the very same policies.”
