Former president Donald Trump is set to hold his first rally with newly-selected running mate Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio just one week after surviving an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.
The rally, scheduled on July 20 in Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, will begin at 5 p.m., with doors opening at 1 p.m. The public can register for up to two tickets to the Grand Rapids rally online at Trump’s official campaign website. Michigan is a key state for any candidate in a presidential election. Trump winning Michigan and other nearby wing states like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania would likely mean a victory over Biden.
The event will be the first rally featuring both Vance and Trump and will be the first since Trump’s nomination at the Republican National Convention in nearby Milwaukee, signaling the state’s importance in the upcoming election.
Despite still recovering from a bullet grazing his ear, Trump still remains undeterred and ready to address the critical issues Michigan faces under the administration of President Joe Biden.
“Joe Biden’s failed policies have left a path of death and destruction in Michigan. President Trump will ease the financial pressures placed on households and re-establish law and order in Michigan! We can Make America Great Again by tackling lawlessness head-on, ceasing the endless flow of illegal immigrants across our southern border, and reversing the detrimental effects inflation by restoring the American people’s wealth,” a statement from the campaign read.
The Biden campaign is also keen on the importance of Michigan to the electoral map.
Vice President Kamala Harris visited Kalamazoo on July 17 to shore up support from voters in southwestern Michigan. The conversation centered on reproductive and abortion rights, a key part of her and Biden’s campaign platform. Harris shared that one of the formative experiences that led her to become a prosecutor was the sexual abuse of a friend when she was in high school.
“I decided that I wanted to take on a career that was about, in particular, protecting women and children from violence,” she said. “The notion that these extremists would say to a survivor of such a crime of violence and a violation of someone’s body, and to say to that survivor, ‘And you have no right or authority to decide what happens to your body next’ — that’s immoral.”
She stressed the immorality of denying survivors of such crimes the right to decide what happens to their bodies. Harris called on people to consider the real effects of abortion bans, which have become apparent since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Harris also publicly spoke about the assassination attempt on Trump for the first time. She condemned the violence and echoed Biden’s call for unity.
“As we all know, it was a heinous, horrible and cowardly act,” she said. “That day, as soon as we saw what was happening, we said a prayer for [Trump’s] well-being. In the aftermath of this weekend’s shooting, one of the questions we now confront is about the way we should engage with one another in this campaign. There must be unity around the idea that while our nation’s history has been scarred by political violence, violence is never acceptable. There can be no equivocation about that.”
The president and First Lady Jill Biden had separate events in the state earlier this month. Biden held a rally in Detroit on July 12, where he vowed to remain in the race, batting down calls from some within his own party to withdraw from the race over concerns about his age.
