Former President Donald Trump has expressed willingness to offer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. a role in his administration if he wins in November.
Nicole Shanahan, Kennedy’s, running mate revealed on a podcast that their campaign is considering withdrawing from the race to endorse Trump and reduce the risk of Vice President Kamala Harris defeating the former president in the upcoming presidential election.
Trump warmly welcomed the potential endorsement from Kennedy in an interview with CNN‘s Kristen Holmes after a campaign stop in Michigan.
“I like him, and I respect him,” Trump said. “He’s a brilliant guy. He’s a very smart guy. I’ve known him for a very long time. I didn’t know he was thinking about getting out, but if he is thinking about getting out, certainly I’d be open to it.” (Related: Trump and RFK Jr. fail to win over Libertarian Party during chaotic convention.)
He confirmed he would “love that endorsement” because he always liked Kennedy.
Trump also responded positively when asked if he would consider appointing Kennedy to a position in his administration should he win in November.
“I like him a lot. I respect him a lot,” Trump said. “I probably would, if something like that would happen. He’s a very different kind of guy – a very smart guy. And, yeah, I would be honored by that endorsement, certainly.”
Moreover, Trump dismissed the possibility of backlash within the Republican Party if he appointed Kennedy due to the independent candidate’s progressive stance on various issues. “I like smart people, and Republicans like me,” Trump stated confidently.
In line with this, RFK Jr. and Trump are set to hold major events in Phoenix on Aug. 23.
That day, RFK Jr. is set to address the nation at 2 p.m. EST. His campaign team has kept the content of his upcoming speech under wraps. However, the timing of his address is especially noteworthy as Trump is also scheduled to hold a rally at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale at 4 p.m. that same day.
The announcement of this speech has sparked widespread speculation about the plans of RFK Jr., especially after Shanahan revealed that he has been considering withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race to endorse Trump.
This upcoming speech will mark the first public event of RFK Jr. since early July.
The evolving relationship between RFK Jr. and Trump has drawn attention, especially since they were once vocal critics of each other.
However, their rapport has warmed over the past few months, particularly after an assassination attempt on Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania. The two have since met in person, discussing the potential for RFK Jr. to drop out of the race and endorse Trump.
