Former President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met at Trump Tower in New York City on Sept. 27. Following the meeting, the Republican presidential nominee immediately declared that he would find a way to end Kyiv’s conflict with Russia with a deal that is “good for both sides.”
“We’re going to work very much with both parties to try and get this settled and get it worked out,” said Trump during a small press conference with Zelensky ahead of a short closed-door meeting with the Ukrainian president. “It has to end. At some point, it has to end. He’s [Zelensky’s] gone through hell. His country has gone through hell.”
Trump claimed he has a “very good relationship” with Zelensky, telling reporters that he also has good relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelensky hoped his cordial relationship with Trump would be maintained.
“It takes two to tango, and we will,” Trump said. (Related: If elected, Trump promises to end Russia-Ukraine war BEFORE taking office.)
Trump also took the opportunity to reference the 2019 impeachment attempt against him as a consequence of him allegedly calling Zelensky to ask him to open an investigation into President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. The Democratic Party claimed that Trump held up aid to Ukraine until Kyiv agreed to his demands.
“It was a hoax, just a Democrat hoax, which we won,” said Trump. He added Zelensky agreed that he did nothing wrong during their phone call, saying that Zelensky “said it loud and clear and the impeachment hoax died right there,” afterward praising Zelensky for being “like a piece of steel.”
Zelensky briefly followed this up by telling reporters that he is certain he and Trump have a common view that Ukraine needs to win the fight against Russia, acknowledging how important the upcoming election is for Kyiv.
“We understand that after November … we hope that the strength of the United States will be very strong,” said Zelensky.
After the short meeting, Trump and Zelensky spoke with Fox News, with the former president saying he “learned a lot” from the conversation with the Ukrainian president.
“We both want to see this [war] end, and we both want to see a fair deal made,” said Trump. “It should stop and the president [Zelensky] wants it to stop, and I’m sure President Putin wants it to stop and that’s a good combination.”
Trump added that the conflict is a “complicated puzzle,” and while he hopes to help hammer out a fair peace deal, it is “too early to say” any specific details this deal will include.
“Putin killed so many people and of course, we need to do everything to pressure him to stop this war. He’s on our territory,” said Zelensky right before inviting Trump to visit Ukraine, which the former president accepted.
Zelensky’s office later published a statement claiming that he and Trump had a “very meaningful meeting.”
“We have a common view that the war in Ukraine must be stopped. Putin cannot win. Ukrainians must win,” said Zelensky.
Meanwhile, Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social that if he is not elected president, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine “will never end” and will instead escalate and “phase into World War III.”
