President-elect Donald Trump has named Kash Patel as his nominee to be the new director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
He announced Patel’s new position in a Truth Social post on Saturday, Nov. 30. Trump lauded Patel as “a brilliant lawyer, investigator and America First fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending justice and protecting the American people.” Trump also praised the nominee for the “pivotal role” he played in uncovering the Russian collusion hoax.
“Kash did an incredible job during my first term –where he served as chief of staff at the Department of Defense, deputy director of national intelligence and senior director for counterterrorism at the National Security Council. Kash has also tried over 60 jury trials.”
The president-elect reiterated that under Patel’s leadership, the FBI “will end the growing crime epidemic in America, dismantle the migrant criminal gangs, and stop the evil scourge of human and drug trafficking across the border.” He also reiterated that Patel and former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, the new nominee for United States attorney general, will “bring back fidelity, bravery and integrity” to the bureau.
Many conservatives reacted positively to news of Patel’s nomination as FBI director, former Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs Robert O’Brien among them. He wrote on X that Patel’s nomination “has made America safer and more just.”
Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) also lauded Patel’s nomination, calling him a “perfect pick” who will “restore law and order” and “end FBI corruption.” Mike Davis of the Article III Project shared the same sentiment, noting that the “unquestionably qualified” Patel “will win Senate confirmation” and “bring much-needed reforms to a broken, corrupt FBI.” (Related: Trump announces 21 of 24 cabinet nominations: here’s an update (Kash Patel just nominated to head FBI.))
But according to the National Pulse, senior FBI officials were working to block Patel’s potential appointment to the bureau. These officials fear that the MAGA official could root out those who cooperated with the corrupt lawfare campaign launched by the outgoing administration of President Joe Biden against Trump and his allies. They also fear that Patel could hold those in the FBI responsible for spying on and harassing American citizens.
These senior FBI officials appear to have an ally in the person of Senator-elect Adam Schiff (D-CA), who has had a personal ax to grind with Patel since 2017. He urged his colleagues to reject Patel’s potential appointment.
“Patel has publicly called for arresting members of the media and government officials, and he is willing to do whatever Trump asks – illegal, unethical or otherwise,” Schiff wrote on X. “More suited as internet troll than FBI director, the Senate must reject him.”
Breitbart News recounted that the California lawmaker “has been trying to destroy Patel since 2017, when he helped expose the fact that members of the outgoing Obama administration abused their power to ‘unmask’ the names of Americans caught on foreign wiretaps.” Such a practice allegedly culminated in the termination and prosecution of former National Security Advisor Gen. Michael Flynn over false accusations that he colluded with Russia, the outlet continued.
Schiff led other Democrats during Trump’s first impeachment investigation in finding evidence of Patel supposedly being a “back channel” for Moscow to the then-45th president. The impeachment report cited a phone call between Patel and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani – then Trump’s lawyer – to back up this claim. However, the probe was in vain and only proved that the House Intelligence Committee led by Schiff had violated Trump’s Sixth Amendment rights by spying on Giuliani.
