The city of Los Angeles was largely “safe and sound” over the past two nights following President Donald Trump’s deployment of thousands of military personnel, as tensions simmered nationwide over his intensified crackdown on illegal migrants.
LA has been under a night-time curfew after several nights of unrest, during which demonstrations were punctuated by vandalism, looting and incidents such as self-driving taxis being torched and stones thrown at police. The protests began in response to Trump’s renewed immigration enforcement push, which he made a central promise of his 2024 reelection campaign. According to Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman of Army North, about 4,700 military personnel, including 700 active-duty Marines, have been actively deployed to work alongside Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while others remain in reserve or are training to manage civil disturbances.
In line with this, Trump declared on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, June 12, that federal forces restored order in LA following widespread anti-deportation protests that erupted earlier this month.
“LA was safe and sound for the last two nights,” Trump posted. “Our great National Guard, with a little help from the Marines, put the LA Police [Department] in a position to effectively do their job. They all worked well together, but without the Military, LA would be a crime scene like we haven’t seen in years.”
Despite the positive feedback of Trump for his military deployment, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat and prominent Trump critic, accused the president of stoking unrest for political gain and using military force to override state authority in the wake of anti-deportation protests rocking Los Angeles.
Appearing on The Daily, a widely followed podcast produced by the New York Times, Newsom strongly criticized Trump’s decision to deploy thousands of military personnel – a move the governor called “unnecessary” and “dangerous.”
“We deal with civil unrest. That’s what law enforcement does”, Newsom said. “The military’s simply not needed. But what he’s doing is trying to gin things up to create proble.”
Newsom acknowledged some incidents of looting, vandalism and vehicles set on fire, but emphasized that such actions were isolated. Newsom acknowledged that LA officials reported some incidents of looting, vandalism and vehicles set on fire, but emphasized that such actions were isolated.
Newsom condemned those acts during the podcast appearance but maintained that local police were equipped to respond without federal help.
Trump, on the other hand, lashed out at Newsom in a post on Truth Social, accusing the governor of losing control and calling him “incompetent.” Thus, he claimed that Newsom should be thanking him. “Governor Gaven NewScum had totally lost control of the situation. He should be saying THANK YOU for saving his ass, instead of trying to justify his mistakes and incompetence!!!” he continued on his post.
