Trump urges McConnell to go “nuclear” to confirm Judge Gorsuch: Why this is the right thing to do

The Marxist, hard-Left Democratic Party and their sycophantic allies in the “mainstream” media are attempting to convince you that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and President Donald J. Trump are set to “destroy” the Senate by opting to “go nuclear” to get the president’s first Supreme Court nominee, Judge Neil Gorsuch, confirmed.

“In 20 or 30 or 40 years, we will sadly point to today as a turning point in the history of the Senate and the Supreme Court, a day when we irrevocably moved further away from the principles our founders intended for these institutions: Principles of bipartisanship, moderation and consensus,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said on the Senate floor, as reported by Reuters.

Don’t believe a word of this, because it’s nonsensical garbage.

The reason why McConnell is set to ditch the longstanding “filibuster” rule – requiring a 60-vote supermajority to advance legislation, Cabinet appointees, federal judges and, in this case, the nomination of a Supreme Court pick – is because Democrats like Schumer have pushed him to it. (RELATED: If it takes changing Senate rules to get Gorsuch confirmed, Democrats have no one to blame but Harry Reid)

Recall, if you will, November 2013. Democrats had a majority in the Senate and Harry Reid was majority leader. In order to get past GOP filibusters of far-Left Obama federal court nominees, Reid and Democrats voted by simple majority to eliminate filibusters on Obama federal court picks.

According to the Washington Post, Reid, at the time, discounted the decades-old filibuster rule, claiming the chamber “must evolve” beyond parliamentary roadblocks.

“The American people believe the Senate is broken, and I believe the American people are right. It’s time to get the Senate working again,” Reid said.

Even Obama got in on the act, as the Post reported:

After the vote, Obama told reporters at the White House that Republicans had turned nomination fights into a “reckless and relentless tool” to grind the gears of government to a halt and noted that “neither party has been blameless for these tactics.” However, he said, “today’s pattern of obstruction . . . just isn’t normal; it’s not what our founders envisioned.”

That was then. Now, Democrats are claiming to be horrified – horrified – that McConnell is giving them a taste of their own medicine.

But here’ the thing: What the “founders envisioned” was that Cabinet, federal court and Supreme Court nominees would be vetted by the Senate on their merits, not on political ideology or affiliation. Yet, as McConnell noted, the Senate’s advice and consent role were politicized long ago – by Democrats.

Reuters noted:

McConnell blamed the escalation of fights over judicial nominees on the Democrats and their opposition starting three decades ago to nominees made by Republican former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.

McConnell called the Democratic effort against Gorsuch “another extreme escalation in the left’s never-ending drive to politicize the court and the confirmation process.” He accused Gorsuch’s opponents of “a singular aim: Securing raw power no matter the cost to the country or the institution.”

He’s absolutely right, as Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, made clear in a recent column decrying the authoritarianism of the hard Marxist-Left Democratic Party.

Understand that the filibuster was a rule; it’s not a constitutional requirement. Contrary to what Obama said, the founders never inserted a 60-vote requirement for approval of presidential nominees. From the outset, they meant for such confirmation votes to be made by simple majority, so in that sense, McConnell is returning the Senate to its roots. More Republicans won elections than Democrats in the Senate, so Republicans get to make the rules. If Democrats (and their media allies) don’t like that, then they should win more elections.

It’s time for the arcane filibuster to go away. Democrats began the process of dismantling it under Reid, and McConnell is using their own reasoning to dismantle it further. Nothing wrong with that, and in fact, it’s safe to say that GOP voters are perfectly fine with it.

Speaking of elections, Trump won his and therefore deserves to have his people considered and, if not found to be unqualified, confirmed. That’s the way the Senate used to work – back before it was politicized by Marxist Democrats.
