In a significant development that underscores the effectiveness of President Donald Trump’s stringent immigration policies, Tom Homan, the President’s border czar, has reported a dramatic decrease in daily illegal immigrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border. The numbers, which have plummeted to historic lows, are a testament to the administration’s commitment to securing America’s borders and prioritizing national security.
According to Homan, the U.S. Border Patrol encountered just 229 illegal aliens across the entire southwest border in the last 24 hours. This is a stark contrast to the high of over 11,000 encounters per day during the Biden administration. “I started as a Border Patrol Agent in 1984, and I don’t remember the numbers ever being that low,” Homan stated on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The reduction in illegal border crossings is a significant achievement, especially considering the surge in encounters that occurred during the previous administration. Homan emphasized, “President Trump pledged a secure border, and he is delivering on that promise.”
President Trump’s re-election in 2024 was marked by a renewed promise to address illegal immigration and border security. On his first day in office, he signed an executive order aimed at tightening immigration policies and launching mass deportations. Homan, a seasoned agent with decades of experience, was appointed to oversee the administration’s illegal immigration crackdown.
The measures implemented by the Trump administration have included increased border patrols, the suspension of illegal entries and the arrest of thousands of illegal immigrants, particularly those with criminal records. Just last week, federal agents in Texas arrested a Venezuelan national and suspected member of the Tren de Aragua (TdA) prison gang, who was previously convicted of attempting to smuggle firearms out of the United States.
“The arrest of a suspected TdA gang member, previously convicted of firearms smuggling, marks a significant victory in our ongoing efforts to enhance public safety,” said Craig Larrabee, Special Agent in Charge of ICE Homeland Security Investigations in San Antonio. “This apprehension is a testament to the diligent work of our law enforcement agencies in rooting out criminal activity and safeguarding our communities.”
Despite the clear progress, some Democrats have criticized the administration’s hardline approach to immigration. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) recently hosted a “Know Your Rights with ICE” webinar, aiming to inform immigrants about their legal rights when interacting with immigration officials. Homan has suggested that such actions may be in violation of the law.
“Rep. Ocasio-Cortez may have broken the law by advising her followers on how to evade the law,” Homan said. The tension between the administration’s focus on border security and the Democratic Party’s advocacy for more lenient immigration policies highlights the ongoing debate over the best approach to managing America’s borders.
The recent decline in illegal immigrant encounters is part of a broader historical context of shifting border security policies. During the Obama administration, border security was a point of contention, with critics arguing that the government was not doing enough to stem the flow of illegal immigration. The situation worsened under the Biden administration, with a significant surge in border crossings that strained resources and led to humanitarian concerns.
President Trump’s campaign in 2024 capitalized on the perceived failures of the previous administration, promising to restore law and order at the border. The dramatic reduction in illegal encounters is a clear indicator that the administration’s policies are having a significant impact.
As the Trump administration continues to enforce its immigration policies, the focus remains on maintaining a secure border and addressing the root causes of illegal immigration. Homan’s report serves as a victory for those who support a strong national security stance and underscores the administration’s commitment to protecting American interests.
The decreasing number of illegal immigrant encounters is not just a political win; it is a critical step toward ensuring the safety and security of the United States. As the administration moves forward, it will likely face continued opposition and legal challenges, but the tangible results speak for themselves.
In the words of Tom Homan, “President Trump promised a secure border, and he is delivering.” For many Americans, this is a reassuring sign that the country is on the right path.
